These 52 frugal (not free) printable letter recognition worksheets (PDF downloads) are an easy and effective, fun and frugal way to reinforce the ABCs in your child’s mind.
Think fast—how do you teach your child his or her ABCs? Probably the first method that comes to mind is the alphabet song. If so, no judgement; I’m not hear to knock the alphabet song, but I am here to suggest there may be a better option.
*cough* Printables. *cough* 😉
While the alphabet song can help your child learn the order of the ABCs, it really does not help him or her build visual association and recognition, which are both important for building pre-reading and pre-writing skills. In fact, if you’re relying on the alphabet song, your kid may not even realize there are 26 separate, individual letters in the alphabet—think about the way many child string the letters “L,” “M,” “N,” “O,” and “P” together into one amorphous blob. Don’t worry though; these preschool letter recognition worksheets can help!
The frugal (not free) printable letter recognition worksheets (PDF downloads) are designed to help your child begin associating the names of letters (“A,” “B,” “C,” etc.) with their visual representation. (What does the letter A look like?) There are 52 separate sheets, one for each letter of the alphabet, in both upper and lowercase form. In other words, there is a letter “A” recognition worksheet for preschoolers and a letter “a” recognition worksheet for preschoolers.
Let’s take a closer look!
Frugal (Not Free) Printable Letter Recognition Worksheets (PDF Downloads): Uppercase Letters
There are 26 preschool letter recognition worksheets for uppercase letters. So while only A, B, and C alphabet worksheets for kids letter recognition are shown below, there is one for each and every letter. (In other words, there are letter M recognition worksheets, etc.) Each worksheet has:
- A cluster of letters, including multiple instances of the letter in question. (So if this was a letter M recognition worksheet, there would be more than one M in the cluster.)
- A sentence that your child can trace to practice pre-writing; this sentence also tells your child what to do with the letter cluster. The sentence reads “Color each letter [INSERT LETTER].” So if this were a pre-k worksheet letter recognition for the letter B, it would read “Color each letter B.”
- A blank line where your child can practice free-hand writing. He or she could either practice writing the letter in question or recreating the sentence he or she traced.
Bonus: While these preschool through kindergarten letter recognition worksheets are a great way to build letter recognition, to keep things fresh and interesting, there are other tactics you may want to introduce. For example, you could use bubble letters and other alphabet templates to:
- Create more coloring pages.
- Develop a larger game version of these alphabet worksheets for kids letter recognition. In other words, print out a bunch of bubble letters, spread them around the floor, and challenge your kid to wade in and pick out certain letters.
- Make a matching game in which your child has to match the upper and lowercase version of letters.
