Help your child build pre-writing and even pre-reading skills with these kindergarten letter worksheets. Choose from two levels of difficulty including kindergarten letter tracing worksheets and kindergarten letter writing worksheets! Plus, choose from worksheets for each letter of the alphabet—letter A worksheets for kindergarten, letter B worksheets for kindergarten, letter C worksheets for kindergarten, etc.
For children, making the leap from learning the ABCs to writing them can seem pretty big, even overwhelming. With two levels of difficulty, these printable kindergarten letter worksheets are a great way to make the transition a little less intimidating. However, these worksheets don’t just offer the opportunity to build pre-writing skills; they also:
- Build letter association by having your child link letters to real world things (an animal). For example, the letter F worksheets for kindergarten feature a frog.
- Serve as kindergarten letter sounds worksheets; by having your child say the name of each animal, like “monkey” on the letter M worksheets for kindergarten, he or she will begin to learn the different sounds letters can make. This can help with phonics and pre-reading skills.
- Provide a craft project by allowing your child to color each animal, which has benefits other than just entertainment. (More on that in a bit!)
So now that you’ve had a sneak peek at all of the awesome benefits of these kindergarten letter worksheets, let’s take a closer look!
Printable Kindergarten Letter Worksheets: Tracing the ABCs
The “easier” of the two sets of worksheets are kindergarten letter tracing worksheets. While only the letter A worksheets for kindergarten, letter B worksheets for kindergarten, and letter C worksheets for kindergarten are pictured here, there is a worksheet for each letter of the alphabet. Each of the kindergarten letter tracing worksheets features:
- Each letter written in upper and lowercase.
- An adorable animal that starts with that letter (for example, the letter D worksheets for kindergarten features a dog). This association is what allows these kindergarten letter tracing worksheets to double as kindergarten letter sounds worksheets!
- That animal’s name written out. This is as much for you as it is for your kid because while most of the animals are pretty recognizable (for example, the letter E worksheets for kindergarten has an elephant), some of them are a little trickier. For example, the letter H worksheets for kindergarten has a hamster and the letter U worksheets for kindergarten has an umbrellabird. (Yes, that’s a real animal!) 😉
- Five opportunities to trace both the upper and lowercase version of the letter.
For example, let’s look at the letter F worksheets for kindergarten. It has:
- The letter F written out as “F” and “f.”
- A cute little frog, just waiting for your kid to add his or her artistic flair.
- The word “frog” written out.
- Five opportunities to trace the letter “F,” in both upper and lowercase.
As already mentioned, these kindergarten letter tracing worksheets have cognitive benefits beyond building pre-writing skills (and beyond pre-reading skills when used as kindergarten letter sounds worksheets). Tracing can:
- Build fine motor coordination.
- Improve hand-eye coordination and visual spatial skills.
- Improve concentration and focus.
- Build hand strength and dexterity.
In addition, the coloring component of these kindergarten letter tracing worksheets have cognitive and mental benefits such as:
- Stimulating creativity.
- Encouraging self-expression.
- Building hand strength and dexterity.
- Improving fine motor coordination.
- Promoting relaxation.
Printable Kindergarten Letter Worksheets: Free-hand Writing
The more difficult kindergarten letter worksheets ask your child to attempt to recreate the letter free-hand. Yes, actual writing. 🙂 Note: While only the letter A worksheets for kindergarten, letter B worksheets for kindergarten, and letter C worksheets for kindergarten are pictured here, there is a worksheet for each letter of the alphabet!
These kindergarten letter worksheets for writing are pretty similar to the kindergarten letter tracing worksheets. For example, they also feature an animal that starts with the letter on the worksheet (for example, the letter M worksheets for kindergarten has a monkey), which means there’s still a coloring opportunity as well as the ability for these to be kindergarten letter sounds worksheets. The big difference is that beneath the animal, there’s a sentence your kid can trace and then a blank line where he or she can attempt to replicate the letter free-hand.
Tracing the sentence, which reads “[Animal Name] starts with [Letter],” will provide your child with valuable experience moving from one letter to another. This is an important step in building those pre-writing skills. For example, on the letter F worksheets for kindergarten, the sentence reads “Frog starts with F,” and on the letter M worksheets for kindergarten, the sentence reads “Monkey starts with M.” This way, your child will get a variety of experience with different letter combos!
Tip: If your child is just starting out with free-hand writing, consider printing multiple copies of these kindergarten letter worksheets, especially for the harder letters such as the letter G worksheets for kindergarten. (In case you didn’t know, a lowercase “g” is the hardest letter to write so your child may struggle with the free-hand section of the letter G worksheets for kindergarten.)
While tracing is a classic learning tool and your child will, obviously, have to actually write at some point, tracing is not the only way to build alphabet recognition, pre-writing, and pre-reading skills. Depending on your child’s learning style, other printables, such as flashcards, games, and coloring may work better. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different language learning tools.
