You’re busy (who isn’t), so I’ll cut right to the chase—these printable shape tracing worksheets are an easy, fun, and frugal way to help your kid not only learn to recognize but also recreate shapes. Whether you’re looking for a common shape printable, like a circle tracing worksheet, or “exotic” tracing shapes preschool and kindergarten worksheets, like for hexagons, keep reading!
Tracing is a tried and true way for people of all ages to learn new skills. Whether it’s an adult seeking to learn how to write calligraphy by using this modern calligraphy alphabet or to learn how to draw bubble letters or a child attempting to write his or her ABCs with these printable preschool ABC worksheets or 123s with this printable number stencils set. Learning shapes is no exception.
This shapes worksheets bundle contains 30 shape tracing worksheets that cover everything from rectangles to octagons. In addition to covering a wide range of shapes (10, to be exact), there are three different styles of tracing shapes preschool and kindergarten worksheets. For each shape there is a:
- Big to small tracing shapes worksheet for preschool PDF download. This page features 17 copies of the shape in question, ranging from large to extra small. As your child develops better fine motor coordination he or she can work up to tracing the smaller shapes with precision.
- Concentric tracing shapes worksheet PDF where there are shapes within shapes, going down in size.
- Happy face preschool shapes worksheet, where the shape in question is recreated with a smiley face in it. This may make the activity of tracing seem a little more whimsical (and a little less like school work)!
Full disclosure, these are frugal not free shape tracing worksheets. However, as I think you’ll see, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Bonus: You’re a savvy shopper right? Of course you are! 😉 So let me tell you where else you get a lot of bang for your buck—on the 132-page printable shapes worksheets bundle available in the Freebie Finding Mom shop! It includes:
- Shape tracing worksheets.
- Matching shapes worksheets.
- Shapes coloring pages.
- Counting shapes worksheets.
- Shape pattern worksheets.
- Printable shapes, both colored and uncolored.
- 2D shapes charts.
- Shapes flashcards.
Printable Circle Tracing Worksheet
The circle tracing worksheets offer the same three versions mentioned above—big to small, concentric, and smiley face. By mixing and matching the worksheets you use, hopefully your little one won’t get bored or catch on to the fact that this is actually an educational activity. Yep, we’re trying to sneak the learning in. (Much the same way I try to hide healthy ingredients, like zucchini, in these zucchini oat chocolate chip cookies.)

If this tracing shapes preschool worksheet is a little too hard for your kid, especially the really small circles, make it a bit easier by having him or her trace with a fatter (and thus easier to grip) writing utensil or invite your kid to color in the circle rather than tracing it. You can always print another copy of this circle tracing worksheet later on, when he or she is ready to to use it as intended.
Bonus: Looking for free shape tracing worksheets for circles? While there are not size variations, like what you get with this frugal circle tracing worksheet, you can get a printable circle shape here and a printable circle shape with color here. On the uncolored shape printable you’ll also find an in-depth refresher on all things circles!
Printable Square Tracing Worksheets
Don’t be a square, man! (Haha, get it?) Or maybe do be a square … or at least draw one with this tracing shapes worksheets PDF. 🙂
Other than the circle, this set of square tracing worksheets is probably one of the easiest, making it a fantastic tracing shapes preschool printable, and overall, a great introduction to squares. That’s because there aren’t a lot of sides (like in the octagon) and the sides are all equal (unlike the trapezoid).

Bonus: Like the rest of the worksheets in this post, the square tracing worksheets are frugal but not free. However, if you’re looking for a free option there is an uncolored printable square shape here and a printable square shape with color here. And if one of your older kids needs help with square related concepts, like how to find the area of a square or finding the square root of a number, you can get a crash course in all things square related here.
Printable Triangle Tracing Worksheets
And we’re on to the printable triangle tracing worksheet! Whew, your kid is flying through these! But don’t worry, there’s still plenty more where that came from. 😉

Bonus: In addition to the triangle tracing worksheet, you may also want to snag this free printable triangle shape, which can be used in at-home art projects and homemade games, like a “driving” course. Plus, it includes an overview of the various types of triangles and basic geometry.
Printable Rectangle Shape Tracing Worksheets
The rectangle shapes worksheet for kindergarten and preschoolers is just one step up from the square tracing worksheet in that not all four sides are equal. No worries, I know your kid has got this! If your kid (or you) is feeling a bit apprehensive, just start with the larger rectangles, which are easier to trace.

Question: Is a square a rectangle? (I bet that question has been keeping you up at night! 😉 ) Find out, plus get a free printable rectangle shape here.
Printable Diamond Shape Tracing Worksheets
The diamond or better known as the rhombus is the first of the tracing shapes worksheets for preschool PDF downloads that probably treads into slightly unfamiliar water for your kid. After all, he or she probably comes into contact with circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles on a regular, if not daily, basis. That probably is not the case with diamonds. Luckily, you can make diamonds seem more familiar by presenting them as squares that are simply tilted!

Bonus: Looking for free shape tracing worksheets for diamonds or a larger printable you can use in art projects, games, and other (non-tracing) educational activities? Look no further than this printable diamond shape or this printable diamond shape with color.
Printable Octagon Shape Tracing Worksheets
Ready to try something more challenging? If your kid is up for it, snag these printable tracing shapes worksheets for octagons. Octagons, with their eight sides, can be difficult, especially at a small size. Luckily, thanks to these tracing shapes worksheets PDFs, your child has lots and lots of opportunities to practice with 37 separate octagons across these three printables! 🙂

Bonus: Unfortunately, your kid won’t be able to stick with shapes coloring pages and tracing worksheets forever. Eventually he or she will move up to … geometry. I know; deep breath. If you could use a math refresher, brush up on your octagon knowledge (and snag a printable octagon shape) here.
Printable Trapezoid Shape Tracing Worksheets
Nope, it’s not a trap … just a trapezoid shape tracing worksheet! Keep the good times (or at least the educational times) rolling with this decidedly non-round tracing shapes worksheets for preschool pdf download. 😉

Bonus: Trying to explain to your kid what a trapezoid even is before asking him or her to trace one? Ugh, just do as I say, am I right? Just kidding! Perhaps this refresher and free printable trapezoid shape can help!
Printable Oval Shape Tracing Worksheets
If any of the preschool shapes worksheets are confusing, it’s probably this one (at least for your little one). After all, the difference between an oval and a circle can be hard for even adults to put into words! Don’t believe it? Go ahead, try explaining the difference between the two….
Not so easy, right? If your kid is struggling to tell the two apart, consider keeping a shapes chart handy for reference or perhaps having your kid give these preschool shapes worksheets a try in addition to the shape tracing worksheets.

Bonus: Want to make your own matching game to help your kid recognize ovals versus circles as well as other shapes? Grab a free printable oval shape here.
Printable Tracing Shapes Worksheets for Hexagons
Put your kid ahead of the curve with this shapes worksheet for kindergarteners. While most of the kids in his or her class will recognize the “basic” shapes, how many will recognize what a hexagon is? Well … at least one will! 😉

Bonus: And if you want to be absolutely sure your child is on a first name basis with all the shapes, be sure to check out these shapes flashcards. They’re a great addition to these tracing worksheets and the individual printable shapes, like the printable hexagon shape.
Printable Tracing Shapes Worksheets for Pentagons
This set of shape tracing worksheets wouldn’t be complete without a pentagon! (That’s exactly what you were thinking, right?) Use these three tracing worksheets to not only reinforce what a pentagon is and how to draw one but also to help your kid develop fine motor coordination, hand-eye coordination, and penmanship (or at least how much pressure to add to the page).

Bonus: See the future, or at least the future of your kid’s geometry homework assignments with this printable pentagon shape and refresher. Luckily, geometry is probably a ways off so you have time to brush up first! 🙂
These tracing shapes preschool and kindergarten worksheets are a great way to not only introduce shapes but many other skills to your child. If you’re looking for more educational worksheets that kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, be sure to check out these Printable Shapes Worksheets for Kindergarten. They’ll reinforce shape recognition and allow your child to work on his or her counting skills!
Happy learning!
