Save Money with Gas Rewards Programs
In my experience, gas, like groceries, is one of the things people think you simply can’t save money on. When it comes to gas, they think the price is the price… no ifs, ands, or buts about it. However, as I demonstrated in my groceries shopping secrets article there is always a way to save money. Gas is no exception, and believe it or not, saving money on gas isn’t even all that hard. All you need to do to save money on gas is take advantage of gas rewards programs.
Yes, you can save money at the pump just by exerting the tiny bit of effort it’ll take to enroll in a gas rewards programs plan. While some gas rewards programs don’t offer HUGE savings, every little bit counts. If you own a gas guzzler or are a bit of a road warrior putting loads of miles on your car, even a little bit of savings can add up fast!
Here are some great gas rewards programs you’ll want to check out!
Shell Gas Rewards Program
With Shell’s gas rewards program you have multiple ways to save. Members save 3 cents off per gallon at any participating Shell location all the time. Pretty simple, right? However, the Shell gas rewards program doesn’t stop there. By linking your credit card to your membership and shopping at approved merchants you earn additional savings at the pump. For example, when you spend $50 at any of the 11,000+ approved restaurants or bars, you’ll save 10 cents off per gallon!
Exxon Mobil Gas Rewards Program
This gas rewards program is good at any participating Exxon or Mobile station. How it works is you sign up for their “Return and Earn” program, shop inside their convenience stores, and then save money at the pump. Certain locations may offer special incentives such as earn extra rewards for buying certain products. The only real downfall of this program is you don’t automatically save… meaning if you aren’t spending money in the store you aren’t saving money at the pump.
BP Gas Rewards Program
BP has two gas rewards programs for you to choose from. You can either opt for their loyalty program or their credit card to save money.
With the loyalty program (BP Driver Rewards card), through September 1st, you can save $0.25 per gallon for every $100 you spend on BP fuel. This is an awesome deal if you tend to go through gas! After September 1st, you’ll earn 10 cents off per gallon for every $100 you spend.
For you true road warriors, BP offers a one time “Ultimate Status Reward” where you can earn 15 cents off per gallon when you spend $300 on BP fuel within a single calendar year. In addition to the savings at the pump you’ll also receive exclusive promotional offers.
If you opt for the BP Visa card you’ll snag an amazing introductory offer: Save $0.25 on each gallon for every $100 you spend anywhere Visa cards are accepted (except at non-BP gas stations) for the first 90 days. After the 90 days, you’ll get:
- 15 cents off per gallon for every $100 you spend on groceries, restaurants, and travel (see terms and conditions for exclusions).
- 10 cents off per gallon for every $100 you spend at BP stations.
- 5 cents off per gallon for every $100 you spend anywhere Visa cards are accepted (except at non-BP stations).
Sunoco Gas Rewards Program
Like BP, Sunoco offers multiple gas rewards programs to help you save. The first option is their APlus rewards card which works similar to the Exxon Mobile gas rewards program. You score savings at the pump by buying products at the APlus convenience store. The second option is their Sunoco Rewards credit card. With the credit card, you automatically save 5 cents off per gallon when you use the card at a Sunoco station. The third option, which you can use in conjunction with the other gas rewards programs, is to shop at participating grocery stores to earn additional savings. Sunoco has partnered with:
- Shop ’n Save
- Price Chopper
- Redner’s Warehouse Markets
When you buy groceries at these stores you earn additional money off at the Sunoco pumps.
So, as you can see, many stations offer gas rewards programs that can help you save at the pump. However, it isn’t just gas stations that allow you to save money on fuel. You can also save money on gas by buying groceries. Yep, that’s right, some grocery stores offer gas rewards programs. A few are:
Ask your local grocery store if they offer any type of gas rewards programs to make sure you aren’t missing out on any savings. Let’s take a closer look at the Safeway gas rewards program to see what kind of discounts you may be able to snag through your grocer….
Safeway Gas Rewards Program
Every time you shop at Safeway and use your customer loyalty card, you’re earning points that can save you big at the pump. You earn one point for every dollar spent on groceries and pharmacy items and two points for every dollar spent on qualifying gift cards. Your points build up and when you reach a certain level you start saving. The levels are:
- 100 points = 10 cents off per gallon
- 200 points = 20 cents off per gallon
- 1,000 points = $1.00 off per gallon
Pretty impressive huh?
In addition to gas rewards programs, here are a couple of other things to consider to save money at the pump. One, Wal-mart routinely runs a deal where you can save 3 cents per gallon at their gas stations simply by paying with a Wal-mart gift card. Seriously. All you have to do is go to Wal-mart, load a gift card, and then buy their gas. In addition, there are other gas rewards credit cards which may be worth your time, especially if you travel a lot.
