Looking for an easy, fun fall snack? Good luck with that! No, I’m just kidding, you’ve come to the right place. One of my favorite “special occasion” snacks is puppy chow, and for fall, I like to whip up a pumpkin spice puppy chow.
Note: If you haven’t heard of it, this pumpkin spice puppy chow is not actually for puppies. Again, do not feed this to your dog as it contains chocolate which is a dog no-no.
There are a lot of different varieties of puppy chow, sometimes called muddy buddies, out there. However, most of the recipes entail combining cereal, melted chocolate, and powdered sugar. Which sounds amazing, right? This pumpkin spice puppy chow gets a little something extra thanks to the pumpkin spice flavored chocolate you use.
This pumpkin spice puppy chow is quick and simple to make. You can make a batch of in abut 15 minutes without even turning your oven on! One of the things I really like about this pumpkin spice puppy chow recipe is that you can make it just about anywhere. You can make it sitting around a campfire (use the fire to melt the chocolate instead of a microwave) or in a college dorm room… or in the comfort of your own kitchen, but you get what I’m saying.
In addition, this pumpkin spice puppy chow is super easy to scale up and down. Want to make just a little so you and the family don’t go overboard on the sugar? No problem, cut the recipe in half. Have a huge holiday party planned? No problem, double the recipe. Regardless, this pumpkin spice puppy chow is still easy to make.
This pumpkin spice puppy chow really only has one downfall… it isn’t healthy. Sorry, there’s just no way that chocolate and powdered sugar can be good for you and your waistline. (Trust me, I’ve tried to think of a way!) 🙂
However, it’s lack of super food ingredients and nutritious properties shouldn’t stop you from eating this pumpkin spice puppy chow occasionally. Notice the word occasionally. It’s totally okay to indulge every now and again. Just don’t go overboard. That’s why I like to make this pumpkin spice puppy chow as a special occasion treat. If you’re looking for healthier snack options, I’ve got a treasure trove of them including some that are kid approved. Here are 38 healthy snacks for kids (and adults). One of my absolute favorites is coconut oil popcorn, which is a must for movie night around my house.
Anyway, ready to dive into some pumpkin spice puppy chow? I know I am!
1. Add candy melts to a small mixing bowl and microwave at 50% power for 4 to 5 minutes (or until melted), stirring every 30 seconds.
2. Add Chex cereal to another bowl.
3. Pour melted chocolate over Chex cereal and mix carefully, ensuring every piece of cereal is covered in chocolate.
4. Place powdered sugar and chocolate covered Chex in a large freezer bag, seal, and shake well to combine.
5. Pour the bag’s contents into a large serving bowl and add Fall Harvest Blend M&M’s.
6. Mix and enjoy your pumpkin spice puppy chow!
Tip: When fall comes to an end, it doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying this pumpkin spice puppy chow. Simply give it a little twist and keep on snacking on it right through the holidays. Replace the pumpkin spice candy melts with regular chocolate candy melts or Wilton candy cane candy melts. Then swap out the Harvest Blend M&Ms for a bag of just red and green M&Ms (yep, they sell those). And there you have it, you’ve transformed this pumpkin spice puppy chow into holiday reindeer chow!
P.S. I would not actually feed this to reindeer. I’m not sure chocolate is good for them either. 😉
