Let’s Play the “What If” Game…
What if you suddenly came in to some money? What if one of your major bills was temporarily paid for you? What if you found yourself mortgage or student loan free for a whole year?
What if this wasn’t just a game?
Guess what, it isn’t!
In an attempt to help families across America gain financial confidence, SunTrust launched the #onUpSweepstakes (running through August 31st) which gives you the chance to have your mortgage, car payment, or student loans paid for an entire year. So, what if you won? What would you do with that extra money?
Here’s what I’d do….
If I won the #onUpSweepstakes, I’d have SunTrust pay my mortgage for the next year. (Just thinking about it makes me seriously excited!) With that extra money I’d do a several things including…
I’m Going to Disney World
The first thing I’d do is plan a long overdue family vacation to Disney World. This is mostly so my son Ian will stop asking me if we can go there! 🙂 No joke, almost daily, he asks me when we can take a trip to Disney World. Recently, a couple of his friends have gone so now apparently it is his turn.
Not that we couldn’t use some quality family time together!
I started pricing out Disney vacations, but unfortunately, they are not cheap. In fact, they don’t even live in the same zip code as cheap…. especially if you want to stay in a Disney resort. So, if SunTrust (or any willing individual 😉 ) paid my mortgage I would splurge on a Disney resort and enjoy all of the Disney perks.
Save It for a Rainy Day… or College
Another thing I would do if I didn’t have a mortgage to worry about is contribute more to Ian’s 529 college savings fund. Knowing the high cost of a college education, I try to increase our contributions every year. Having some additional money available would help tremendously towards making that happen.
Hit the Brakes… or Not
I would also love to put money towards buying a new (or at least newer) car. I love my 2004 Honda Accord, but between all the dirt, food and beverage stains, and Cheerios and Goldfish lodged in every crack and crevice (thanks Ian!), it’d be nice to have something a little less worn and torn by the kiddo. In addition to having a car that hasn’t been defiled by kids, I’d be more comfortable with something with a few less miles and a little extra space such as a crossover.
Let’s Get a Makeover
After the family vacation, college account contributions, and newish car, if there was any money leftover, I’d buy some new clothes for my husband and I. Nothing too fancy, just everyday type clothes.
I’m constantly spending our entire clothing budget on Ian since kids grow so quickly and are so hard on outfits. Half the time I don’t even know what the stains on his clothes are! 🙂
I can’t even remember the last time I bought a complete outfit of new items for myself or my husband. It’s a tad bit embarrassing to say this but both of us still have (and wear) clothes from our college days! You may be waving this away and thinking it isn’t so bad but we’ve been out of college for a long time. I’m not saying how long… just trust me on this.
What About Retirement?
My husband and I both do a pretty good job of contributing to our IRAs so I wouldn’t feel too much pressure to use the money there. However, there’s always room for improvement, right? So if there was extra money after everything else, I’d increase our contributions to our retirement accounts.
While I know the chances of me winning the #onUpSweepstakes are pretty slim, I can’t help fantasizing about the possibilities. If I won, I’d probably literally dance for joy. I’d feel so grateful and excited not to mention less stressed about the pressure of meeting all of my family’s needs.
