If you were to Google “Stocking Stuffers for Men” the search engine would return over 19 million possible results. Obviously, there are plenty of sites out there willing to tell you what to get that special guy this holiday season. (Even this blog has a stocking stuffers for him gift guide.) While there’s nothing wrong with scouring the Internet for some inspiration, the fact of the matter is you can find the perfect stocking stuffer for him just by applying some observational skills.
One of my favorite things about the holidays is seeing the hubby’s eyes light up when I surprise him with a gift. Sure, it’d be a lot easier to just grab him another sweatshirt with his favorite sport’s team logo on it or just ask him what he wants, but where’s the fun in that? By doing a little sleuthing, I get to (potentially) learn something new about Mr. Freebie Finding Mom AND see his jaw drop and eyes light up on Christmas morning. Seriously, sometimes he looks more excited than the little man! 🙂
So, this holiday season, don’t take the easy way out. Spend a few minutes with your detective hat on and find that perfect stocking stuffer for him. Here are some tips and possible starting points:
Practical Does Not Mean Predictable
A lot of times we stray away from a very useful, practical gift because we’re afraid that the receiver won’t be suitably impressed. However, often times, the opposite is true. According to Derek Thompson at The Atlantic, research has shown that “Gift receivers would be happier if givers gave them exactly what they requested rather than attempting to be ‘thoughtful and considerate’ by buying gifts they did not explicitly request to surprise them.”
Does this mean you have to just ask the guy in your life what he wants? Certainly not!
However, instead of getting him something you think he might want or may use, pay attention to what his actual needs and wants are. For example, the next time he whips out his wallet, take a good look at it. Is the leather cracked and peeling? Then a new wallet may be in order.
Does he shave regularly? Then perhaps a subscription to the Dollar Shave Club would be handy.
Does he spend ample time in front of the mirror making sure every hair is in place? If so, a great gift might be the Old Spice “Happy HAIRdays” stocking which includes:
- Pomade – For hair that’s reworkable over and over.
- Paste – For a textured finish and that natural, bed-head look.
- Putty – For a sturdy yet shapeable hold.
- Fiber Wax – For a flexible hold with shine.
- Forming Creme – For a more natural hold.
Don’t want to purchase the entire Old Spice stocking? No problem! You can purchase the Old Spice Pomade, Old Spice Shampoo, and other great Old Spice hair products individually.
Take a look at the products he uses on a daily basis. If any of them are looking worn out, consider a replacement as a practical stocking stuffer that is sure to be appreciated.
Give from the Heart
Homemade stocking stuffers are sure to be memorable; plus, they can save you money. If you have kiddos, homemade gifts are an even better option because you can get the kids in on the fun and come up with something completely adorable. In fact, here are 25 Christmas crafts to tackle with the kids.
Not a DIY diva? No worries! You can still give a heartfelt gift. Simply go for a more personal item. Try to find something he enjoys but maybe can’t get often due to budget constraints. For example, a special food or drink may be just the thing, which brings me to…
The Best Way to His Heart Is Through His Stomach
The truth is, most of us love to eat and drink. In fact, I think a lot of the snow we see in December is actually powdered sugar and flour from all the baking! 🙂 Anyway, if the guy in your life is particularly difficult to shop for and you really want to score the perfect stocking stuffer, consider food or a beverage.
It should be pretty easy to observe the things he eats and drinks and to work a conversation around to fav foods. Put on your listening cap and get creative. Is there a recipe his mom used to make that he never gets anymore? Call her up and get the details. Then wake him up Christmas morning with a fresh batch of waffles, cookies, or whatever the food is. Is there a brand of coffee he loves but it’s a real budget breaker? Consider a pound as an indulgent stocking stuffer.
In my experience, most guys are gadget-addicts, but don’t take my word for it. A Credit Donkey survey showed that 82% of men are asking Santa for electronics! While I’m not saying your guy is like all other guys, 82% covers a lot of the male population. Consider getting him a hot gadget such as a tablet, fitness tracker, or even a remote controlled drone, any of which may make him scream like a 10 year old boy on Christmas morning!
If you aren’t technologically savvy or simply don’t know what kind of gadget to gift, a gift card is always an option. Don’t feel like a gift card is opting out. Trust me, if it comes down to a gift card versus something the receiver really doesn’t want, they’ll be thrilled to get a gift card.
Keep in mind that you can always dress that gift card up by turning it into a snow globe!
Don’t Be so Materialistic
“Over the past decade, an abundance of psychology research has shown that experiences bring people more happiness than do possessions,” (Hamblin, 2014). This means that instead of filling his stocking with stuff you should give him an experience.
Start by asking yourself:
- What does he like to do?
- What are his hobbies?
- What does he like to watch?
- What does he like to eat/drink?
The answers to these questions should give you an awesome starting place. For example, if he’s really into sports, buy him a set of tickets to the next big game. Tip: Nosebleed seats will still rock his stocking and keep you on budget. If he loves craft beers consider hitting up Groupon to save big on a local brewery tour and tasting.
Even if the event is well in the future, you can still stuff his stocking with it. Simply print out a brochure, the tickets, or something that previews the gift and place it in his stocking. The anticipation will be the gift that keeps on giving!
As you can see, you don’t need to comb through hundreds and hundreds of articles telling you what the perfect stocking stuffer is for your man. Just by being observant, listening, and getting creative, you’ll be able to come up with the best stocking stuffer ever!
