Have you started making your Christmas shopping list? Do you know what you are getting everyone? If you need a little DIY inspiration for your gift giving efforts this year, check out this fun and easy DIY gift idea I pulled together.
I love the thought of being able to give heartfelt DIY gifts to friends and family, but let’s face it, this girl is not very DIY savvy which is why I have to expend extra effort to come up with simple ideas that I can actually perform like this DIY meal in a basket idea. The reason I am a fan of gifting a meal in a basket is because it is a thoughtful gift that shows my gift recipient I took the time to select items I thought she would like, and it allows her the ability to make a homemade meal for her family at her convenience without all the prep work involved.
To put together this DIY gift idea, I headed to Walmart where I picked up a myriad of items including Pepperidge Farm Cookies, a Pepperidge Farm Cracker Trio, a box of Barilla Pronto Pasta, and a bottle of Estancia Cabernet Sauvignon. I also grabbed a block of Parmesan cheese for a DIY cheese plate I am going to include in the gift basket along with everything for the One Pot Pasta Primavera mason jar I am including in the basket. The only items that are needed for the One Pot Pasta Primavera recipe that I did not include are the olive oil and pasta sauce (I recommend using a jar of Barilla Pasta Sauce, the Traditional variety). I also included in her gift basket a few extras for her to indulge in while she enjoys sipping her wine (i.e. Pepperidge Farm Cookies and a Pepperidge Farm Cracker Trio).
Above is an image to show where at Walmart I was able to locate all of the main items I needed for the DIY gift basket, and below I share the recipe for the One Pot Pasta Primavera I am including in the DIY gift basket. To make gift giving even easier, I have included a free printable mason jar label below that you can save and print for your own mason jar gift which contains the recipe ingredients and directions.
I love that I was able to find everything I needed for my gift basket in one store (even the wine!) because this busy mom doesn’t have time to haul it to several places. I was impressed to learn that Walmart carries a great selection of super premium wines at great prices.
Walmart really is the go-to place for holiday gift giving and entertaining. If you are heading to Walmart, be sure to check out the Simple Entertaining hub here to learn about upcoming wine tastings and Barilla & Pepperidge Farm demos that may be occurring in your area in November and December.
One Pot Pasta Primavera
1/2 box Barilla Pronto Penne Pasta
1/2 Cup Barilla Traditional Sauce
1/8 Cup Carrots
1/8 Cup Red Onions
1/8 Cup Bell Peppers
1/8 Cup Eggplant
1/8 Cup Cherry Tomatoes
1 Clove Garlic
1/2 Teaspoon dried basil
1/2 Teaspoon oregano
1/2 Teaspoon thyme
1/4 Teaspoon salt
1/4 Teaspoon pepper
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1. Cook pasta according to package directions
2. Add in your olive oil and vegetables during last 3 minutes of cooking
3. Add in pasta sauce and herbs during last 2 minutes of cooking
4. Top off with fresh grated Parmesan cheese and enjoy!
As I mentioned above, I am including a DIY cheese plate in the gift basket. This DIY project simply involves taking a plate or platter and painting it with chalkboard paint. I told ya it was easy! 🙂 I love the idea of using chalkboard painted cheese plates and platters around the holidays to label each item you lay out, so guests can clearly tell what their options are. Knowing that my friend enjoys entertaining which includes wine and cheese parties, I thought this would be a useful gift to include.
DIY GIFT BASKET ASSEMBLY

This meal in a basket gift is great for nearly anyone on your Christmas shopping list including family and friends, but it is especially great for busy moms who strive to put a home cooked meal on the table but sometimes struggle to find the time and energy.
I hope this DIY gift demonstrated that it doesn’t take a tremendous amount of money or time to pull together a thoughtful gift for someone special.
