Breastfeeding FAQs: Answered by Amwell’s Online Lactation Services
If you’re a new mom trying to tackle breastfeeding for the first time, it can be a little overwhelming. Everyone (and I do mean everyone) will be standing by to offer you advice… unfortunately, their advice is often contradictory and flat out confusing. Ugh! Sure, you could schedule a lactation consultation with your doctor but that would mean hauling yourself and very likely your newborn to the doctor’s office. Not exactly a treat. However, there’s also another option: Amwell’s Lactation Services.
Amwell is the nation’s largest telehealth company. It allows you to connect with board-certified doctors 24/7 from any internet connected device. That means from the comfort of your own home, a hotel room, or anywhere you happen to be!
You can learn more about Amwell in this short video and how you can save on your first visit!
In general, Amwell doctors can help with:
- Minor illnesses and injuries
- Wellness concerns
- Prescription refills
- Behavioral issues (they have behavioral specialists)
And now lactation issues thanks to the new Amwell Lactation Services lactation consultants!
The Amwell Lactation Services allow new mothers to ask questions, address concerns, and get breastfeeding advice from the comfort of their own home. And unlike just hitting up Google, Amwell’s consultants are all International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants so you can rest assured that you’re getting sound medical advice. Turning to Amwell’s lactation consultants, in addition to being more convenient, may also be faster than scheduling a visit locally. Typically, a consultation can be conducted within 24 hours of request.
I recently had the opportunity to try a lactation consultation thanks to Amwell, and I have to say I was pretty impressed all the way around. Setting up the appointment was super easy, and I was able to schedule my lactation consultant meeting within 24 hours. In fact, they had earlier appointments, they just didn’t work with my schedule.
My consultant’s name was Sarah Johnson, and she was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.
I am not currently breastfeeding, but she and I were able to discuss several questions that I had prior to nursing my son. Hopefully, the answers to these questions will be of help to currently nursing and/or expecting moms.
How does hypothyroidism effect breastfeeding?
It can reduce your milk supply. It is important to get your thyroid levels checked pre, during, and post pregnancy.
How long is the ideal duration to breastfeed?
It is recommended to breastfeed for a minimum of 6 months exclusively continued up to 12 months. The World Health Organization says to nurse continued up to 2 years.
What is the best diet to have while breastfeeding?
A well-balanced diet, and be sure to take your pre-natal vitamins. Eat foods high in good fats to help milk supply. If milk supply is low it can affect brain development. Examples of foods high in good fats are avocados, nuts, good oils, and grass fed butter.
Does breastfeeding really help you lose weight faster?
Not really but it depends on the woman and whether she is eating a well-balanced diet.
How is breastfeeding better than formula?
We have antibodies which help prevent diseases and other illnesses (i.e. ear infections, cancer, intestine eating diseases).
What are the best nursing pillows to use?
Bobby pillows and Breastfriends (which is what I had) are fine. You can also just pile up several pillows. The key is to make sure you have enough support.
What are the best pumps to use?
Medela is what Sarah recommends though there is a new brand that is also good called Spectra.
Do you have any advice for women who have to pump at work?
Keep the same eating schedule, so if the baby is eating then you pump otherwise you will lose your milk supply.
Are there any foods to avoid while breastfeeding?
No, just alcohol (may be okay in moderation) and drugs. Be careful consuming herbs like sage and peppermint because they can reduce your milk supply.
Can you get pregnant while breastfeeding?
How many extra calories should you consume while breastfeeding?
Bonus advice: Don’t worry about your milk supply just learn the normal behavior of your child. Realize that Cluster Feeding is normal. This is when the baby eats then takes a break then eats then takes a break etc. The baby is just going through a growth spurt and needs extra calories.
Overall I loved this experience. Amwell is a great resource to have on hand, especially for new moms who have a million questions which often come late at night when the doctor or nurse is not available or even during the day when you simply can’t get out of the house to make an appointment. I would absolutely recommend Amwell Lactation Services and all of their telehealth options to moms. 🙂
