Amwell: The Doctor Is In… Anytime, Anywhere
Unfortunately, illness and accidents aren’t considerate enough to confine themselves to regular office hours, especially when it comes to kiddos. How many times have you been woken up in the middle of the night by a little one with a nasty cough or stomach bug? How many times has your Saturday afternoon come to a screeching halt when your child takes a nasty spill off of a bike or playground equipment? Yep, it has happened to all of us (more than once!). So, what’s a mom to do? Do you rush to the nearest urgent care or emergency room racking up HUGE bills or try to wait it out until the doctor’s office reopens in the morning?
The answer? Neither! You schedule an urgent care appointment with Amwell.
Amwell is the nation’s largest telehealth company. They allow you to connect with board-certified doctors 24/7/365. Yep, you read that right. You can now access doctors anytime, anywhere. Well… anywhere with an Internet connection. (Which is just about everywhere nowadays!) 🙂
Amwell doctors can assist you much more than just minor illness and injuries; for example they can help out with:
- Wellness concerns (ex. nutritional advice)
- Prescription refills
- Lactation advice
- Behavioral issues
This video will give you an overview of the Amwell service and how to make an appointment.
Pretty simple right?
In the past, I used Amwell to get advice about dealing with my allergies. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick it was to schedule an appointment. Most appointments take place within 24 hours. The doctor was knowledgable and friendly and the whole thing took place in the comfort of my own home. Bonus: An Amwell visit costs just $59! However, for a limited time, you can save 50% on your first visit with an exclusive coupon (more on that in a minute)!
Recently (unfortunately), I had the opportunity to try Amwell again when my son had a minor accident. Going in, I was a little skeptical about using Amwell for this because I didn’t want to wait, but I was really happy to discover they offer urgent care appointments!
So here’s what happened: My little man slammed his fingers in the door, but not just any door… the fire door that goes out to our garage. It’s heavy. Very heavy. Ouch! The impact immediately bruised two of his fingers (eventually the nail fell off one of them). I was immediately really concerned and wondering if anything was broken. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell if I’m just being an overprotective mother so… what could I do?
I scheduled an urgent care doctor visit via Amwell with Dr. Ronald Stratton.
The doctor had a great bedside manner and was quite reassuring. Here was his advice:
- Immediately after the incident I can give him Tylenol but not Ibuprofen because that will make him bleed more.
- Take him to get an X-ray to make sure nothing is broken. Then check to see how the fingers are functioning. Can he move them without pain?
- After the doctor confirms nothing is broken, he or she will wrap it tightly for 24-48 hours with Neosporin ointment.
- After a couple of days, remove the wrap and allow for the injured finger to get some air. If you have too much moisture in there for too long it can cause bacteria to grow.
- For the nail to grow back entirely it will take 4-6 months.
- And just so I don’t panic later on… Dr. Stratton said when an entire nail falls off you never know how it will grow back. It may grow back the same, have ridges, or have a “V” down the center.
All of this made me feel a lot better and gain a better understanding of what to do immediately after the incident and down the road. It also reassured me that hightailing it to the hospital was the right decision. The appointment was definitely worth the $59.
Do you think Amwell could help you and your family out? If so, I really encourage you to give the service a try. They have SOOO much to offer and at such a good price.
Plus, right now, you can save 50% on your first Amwell visit (so it’ll only be $29.50) with coupon code MOMHELP17 (expires 12/31/17).
If you do try Amwell I’d love to hear what you think. Please share in the comments. 🙂
