4 Tips to Keep Kids Safe This Halloween
I bet your kiddos love Halloween, am I right? Carving pumpkins, dressing up, getting lots of free candy, and maybe even staying up past bedtime… what’s not to love? However, as a parent, I bet it isn’t exactly your favorite holiday, right? Personally, while I like seeing the little man in an adorable costume, there are some things that I’m not crazy about when it comes to Halloween. Not to be a real party pooper, but I have some safety concerns. Here are 4 tips I’ll be using this Halloween to make sure my kiddo stays safe.
#1 – Never split up!
It’s true in horror movies and it’s true when trick-or-treating—never split up! Luckily, my little one is still young enough that this isn’t a huge problem, but a lot of times I see kids running amok with their parents trailing two or thee houses behind.
To ensure your kids stay safe and have a good time, tell them they have to wait for you and can’t run ahead. Kids running ahead without a parent could wind up getting hit by a car, getting knocked down and injured, getting lost, or sadly, getting abducted.
#2 – Don’t go as the invisible man.
When picking a costume for your kids, make sure that they’ll be visible. Look for costumes that are brightly colored or have reflective elements. If your kiddo is insisting on a costume that might be hard to see consider adding accessories that will make it more visible. For example, look for glow stick bracelets or necklaces or flashing light attachments like what joggers and cyclists use at night.
This safety tip is especially important if you live in a neighborhood with poor lighting or places where a lot of people park on the street and your child might step out from between two cars into the road.
#3 – Discourage sharing.
As a parent, I never thought I’d say this, but discourage your kids from sharing candy with other children until you’ve had a chance to inspect all the candy and they’ve asked the other kids’ parents.
Today, many kids have allergies such as to peanuts, which includes peanut butter. Your child innocently giving a peanut butter cup to another kid could result in serious illness or even death.
Bonus tip: For your own peace of mind, you should tell your kiddos they can’t dig into that Halloween candy until you’ve had a chance to inspect it. This will prevent them from ingesting:
- Anything they’re allergic to.
- Something that might be a choking hazard.
- Enough sugar that they’re bouncing off the walls.
- Something you don’t want them to have, like bubble gum which is sure to end up in someone’s hair or your carpet!
#4 – Health should be a component of safety.
While you’re proactive about your kiddo’s safety you should also be proactive about their health. For instance, make sure you limit candy and fill their diet with nutritious and delicious foods.
You could even go so far as to buy back their candy to discourage consumption. In fact “23.59% of dads said they would offer to buy back their kids’s candy as away to limit their children’s candy consumption,” (Source: Crest survey).
In addition, since kids are probably ingesting more sugary sweets than normal, you’ll want to be extra vigilant about their oral health.
By the way, in doing this, you won’t be alone, a recent Crest survey found “Seven in 10 parents enforce a stricter teeth brushing and flossing routine on Halloween, and 41% compensate for Halloween candy by serving a healthier dinner on the holiday itself or the next night.”
For my family’s oral health, I trust Crest. Crest offers a myriad of products that all work together to keep our mouths looking and feeling fantastic. However, don’t just take my word for it. Crest products are some of the most commonly recommended by dentists and dental professionals!
In addition to providing a line of products that work well together, I trust Crest because they have a variety of flavors and speciality products geared toward different dental conditions. For instance, the Crest Pro-Health toothpaste is a fluoride and antimicrobial toothpaste that is clinically proven to protect areas that dentists check most! They also have Gum & Enamel Repair Toothpaste that is proven to reverse gingivitis. Whatever your family’s dental needs are, I’m sure Crest can help.
Oh, and right now you can save big on Crest products at your local CVS. From October 28th to November 3rd, twin packs of Crest Pro-Health and Crest Pro-Health Advanced, Crest Complete, Crest 3D White, Crest 3D White Brilliance, and Crest 3D White Luxe are “Buy One, Get One 50% off.” Plus, when you spend $20 on P&G products (including Crest) at CVS during this time frame you’ll receive $5 Extra Bucks.
The savings don’t stop there. On October 28th, there will be a coupon insert in local papers that allows you to save an extra $1 on Crest toothpaste at CVS stores nationwide! There’s never been a better time to try the Crest family of products.
